Ring of Honor Final Battle 2010, Steen/Generico: (Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5)
Remember how I said that mask was my safety net in this feud, my promise I’d never see Generico all bloody? Well, that first gif, in which Steen starts to rip open Generico’s mask above his eye with grim and focused determination–that was the point at which I stood up and called both of these men some of the vilest things I could think of, because there’s only one way this is going. The worst part, somehow, was that for a moment I could glimpse Sami Zayn’s face beneath the mask, and that–! Oh, nothing had prepared me for how strangely upsetting that would be.
The sight of Generico bleeding drives Steen into an ecstasy in which he wallows in Generico’s blood: licking it, bathing in it, anointing his junk with it, good God, Kevin, no. At this point you’d expect the crowd to be baying, but mostly they go oddly quiet, muted with horror (look at how many of them throw their hands over their heads, aghast, when he licks his palm). That second-to-last shot, where he reminds the audience that this is what they’re here for, this is what they want and paid for–it’s almost painful in a totally meta way, bless whoever that lone shaking voice was that denied him.
The moment the last gif captures takes place at precisely the halfway point of the match and marks the point at which the tide of the battle shifts and Generico goes on the offense at last.
I was talking to @mithen about Kenny and Kota and she pointed out that they’re kind of the opposite of Sami and Kevin. The Golden Lovers want to fight one more time and then never again. Kevin and Sami want to fight forever.
“They’re different ways of holding each other as precious, you know?” -mithen
Ring of Honor, Final Battle 2011: After a year’s exile from RoH (caused when El Generico defeated him at Final Battle 2010), Kevin Steen defeats Steve Corino to win his job back. Generico appears to stop the carnage and gets package piledriven for his efforts by a joyous Steen.
The audio doesn’t pick it up, and I’m no expert lipreader, but I am pretty sure what Kevin says at the end there to Generico is “Forever, and ever, and ever.”
